SWINDON will be turning pink tomorrow as hundreds of businesses, schools and shops mark National Wear It Pink Day.

The day is part of Breast Cancer Campaign’s focus on Pink Science, a pioneering approach to breast cancer research that funds projects with the greatest potential to save and improve lives, and ultimately find a cure.

Up and down the country, businesses, schools and shops will turn pink to help raise money for the cause and throughout the last month, events have been held to support breast cancer charities.

The Adver have supported Breast Cancer Action Month by setting up a Just Giving page for anyone wishing to make a donation to the charity, and donating 1p from every paper sold on Tuesday, October 16.

Staff at the Swindon Advertiser offices in Victoria Road will be wearing pink or will be facing a “fine” from colleagues, who will also be selling pink doughnuts and raffling prizes.

Advertiser editor Gary Lawrence said: “We had a great response to our Breast Cancer Action Month supplement, with extra sales and nice feedback.

“We want to end the month with another appeal for people to donate some money to help overcome this cruel disease and support those who are fighting it.

“A donation, however small, to our Just Giving page would be wonderful.”

The Wiltshire Breakthrough Breast Cancer Group is run by volunteers led by Lynn Parfrey as the group leader.

Lynn took on the role from Shirley Garman who founded the group in 1995, but died in September 2009 after being diagnosed with a secondary cancer brain tumour.

The group is one of 51 region groups around the UK who work on behalf of the national charity based in central London.

The Wiltshire group brings in around £30,000 a year.

A substantial proportion of this is raised through the Mad March Hare run, which has been held for five years. The group is always looking for new ideas on how to hold fundraising events and this often happens when new members join the group.

Paul Parfrey, the president of the newly formed Rotary Club of Swindon Phoenix, has arranged a Wear Something Pink event at Blunsdon House Hotel on October 31.

The event will help raise money for the breast screening unit at the Great Western Hospital and will take place from 7pm, with a two-course meal, a quiz and entertainment.

Tickets are £18 a person and are available by calling Paul on 07929 725708.
