FOOTBALL: Derby spoils to Corsham
TREVOR Rawlings was relieved to see his Corsham Town pick up a much-needed three points as they triumphed over local rivals Westbury United on Wednesday night.
Corsham had gone four games without a win but Ross Lye’s first half penalty put them ahead against Sam Gooding’s Westbury.
After an extended period of United pressure, Town hit back with two quick-fire goals to kill off any chance of a fightback.
First, a flowing team move ended with Jamal Chevolleau blasting home the hosts’ second of the evening before, just two minutes later, a deflection off a Westbury defender put Corsham 3-0 up.
Tom Rooney got a goal back for Goodings’ men late on but it was only a consolation as the bragging rights went to Rawlings’ side.
“To be honest, it wasn’t a good game at all but those three points were much needed – I was interested in the points and not the performance because we’ve had a few draws and defeats recently,” said the Corsham manager.
“Ross’ penalty put us ahead but we never really got going at all after that until a brilliant move and a great finish from Jamal, which was right into the top corner.
“I think that they had a few players out and we were definitely missing a few, so it was a good result.”
Corsham are in the midst of an injury crisis and Rawlings is currently on the hunt for reinforcements to deal with a host of absentees.
Goalkeeper Scott Windle was injured in a collision during last weekend’s disappointing 5-0 defeat to Sherborne Town while brother and captain Matt will be ruled out from playing for a year when he goes under the knife for a hand operation next month.
Ryan Tyrell is suspended, Nick Holton and Gary Blackwood are out with problems while Jamie Moss and Lye were also playing through the pain against Westbury.
“I’ve put seven days in for a keeper and I’m looking around as much as possible for other players at the moment because we just don’t know who we’re going to have,” Rawlings said.
