THE long-awaited clash between the top two sides in Division Two was called off at the 11th hour with leaders Trowbridge Wanderers Reserves unable to raise a team for their trip to Westbury Town.

With the top two missing out on a fixture, Calne Eagles joined Westbury in second place with second-half goals from goalkeeper Andy Windsor and recent signing Barry Forster ensured a fifth straight league win for Calne Eagles in an incredibly hard-fought 2-0 win over Zeals.

On a heavy pitch, that was only passed fit by the referee just before the game after much discussion and the agreement of both managers, both teams struggled to play any real free flowing football.

Zeals probably edged the early exchanges but found Calne’s defence in stubborn mood.

Nonetheless, their top scorer Joao Rodrigues was thwarted on two occasions by smart saves from Calne’s Windsor.

Zeals were also looking dangerous through the throw-ins and set piece deliveries of their playmaker Glen Sherlock.

However, Calne held out and at the other end in the first half Adam Welch was twice denied by keeper Shane Rendall.

When Rendall was beaten by midfielder Barry Forster, Zeals defender Bradley Carter kept the game scoreless with a goal line clearance.

The second half was equally as scrappy and the game looked like it might have been heading for a stalemate.

Calne’s Barry Forster created the only real chance to score when he hit the post with a shot from distance.

Calne opened the scoring through the most unlikely of sources with 25 minutes left on the clock.

A long kick downfield from Calne goalkeeper Windsor was allowed to bounce in behind the Zeals defence.

Rendall in Zeals’ goal came to try and claim the high ball, but was put under good pressure from Eagles’ top scorer Adam Welch, which resulted in the ball sailing straight into the net with only the merest touch off of Randall’s gloves.

Not surprisingly, after nearly exactly 10 years playing goalkeeper for Calne Eagles and 215 appearances, this was Windsor’s first-ever goal for his side.

Already tiring after going two months without a game, Zeals found it difficult to create any real sustained pressure on Calne's goal thereafter, although a superb last ditch tackle from Calne’s pacy defender Lawrence Elliott prevented Joao Rodrigues from racing through on goal with 10 minute left.

With only five minutes remaining Calne’s Barry Forster got a deserved goal when he skilfully directed a header into the corner of the net from a Karl Sharratt throw-in to complete the 2-0 score line.

Luxol St Andrews Reserves kept themselves in the promotion race with a 2-1 success at home to Trowbridge Town Reserves.

Bobby Cunningham’s side opened their account with a 6-1 win over Ralph McCaldon’s men, but they had to overturn a half time deficit before taking maximum points to claim a league double.

Ashley Poms deflected effort gave Trowbridge a half time lead but had it not been for Luxol keeper Kieran Ramsey, who produced a couple of world-class stops to keep his team in the game, Trowbridge could have had things sewn up at the break.

After the interval and with the wind in their favour Luxol got back on level terms in the 68th minute when Joe Newman scored direct from a corner.

Oli Fox and Dean Matieson were both denied by the crossbar as Town looked to regain the lead and with 10 minutes remaining Rhys Gibbons rifled home the winner for Luxol.
