PUPILS had a smashing time at a re-scheduled conker championships.

Ruskin Junior School, Wordsworth Drive, Upper Stratton, held the event on Wednesday after last week’s was washed out by heavy rain.

Scores of youngsters lined up in a bid to “conquer” one another in the annual championships, which took place a day before the school broke up for half-term.

Special needs co-ordinator and event organiser Emma Peerun said her pupils were happy just be able to take part in the event.

She said: “This is a special day because it teaches the children a little about winning and losing – not to mention being part of the whole thing.

“We were all nervous that it would not go ahead this year so it is a joy just to get out in the fresh air and play conkers.”

Pupil Michelle Imani-Hill said she managed to reach the tournament’s semi-finals.

“We did really well and it’s loads of fun,” she said.

“Last year I lost, so I am happy I did well this year.”

And Year Four student Bethany Smith said: “It has been loads of fun, I am really glad I took part.”

The championship coincided with a school-led art exhibition run in conjunction with National Gallery’s Picture Project. The school’s art co-ordinator, Sarah Prebost, said during the event pupils attempted to represent different parts of Renoir’s iconic Umbrella painting in pictures.
