Westbury United's trip to county rivals Calne Town last night ended in disappointment as they failed to score for the first time this season and were seen off by two late goals.

Calne's Jordan Roberts who was a threat to United throughout the match with Lewis Porter making five saves from him as well as several more before the goals came.

On a pitch made slippery by earlier rain, both teams were guilty of giving the ball away an inordinate amount of times which made for a frustrating evening for spectators.

Westbury only had a single attempt in the opening half and it was the first chance of the match - Luke Stanley burst forward and squared the ball to Mark Young who had to react quickly to chest it but could only divert the ball wide.

The home team began to threaten with both Levi Cox and Roberts having efforts blocked before Porter saved Cox’s mishit volley and, several minutes later, Porter excelled to tip a fierce 30 yard volley by Roberts wide of the post.

Inbetween more poor play by both sides it was only Calne who looked likely to score before the break, with Roberts firing wide from 20 yards and seeing a similar range shot parried by Porter.

Any hopes of an improvement in the quality of play were soon dashed after half time as players continued to find their opposition easier than their own colleagues.

United began to put together a few fine moves and, after Young had forced Steve Allison into a good piece of goalkeeping work to save a low shot, their best attack of the game led to a disallowed goal on 62 minutes.

Beau Blakeman, Paul Beavers, Ryan Baggs, Young and Dave Percival were all involved in a move that ended with Nathan Hallett running in from the left wing and heading the ball into the net only to be denied by an offside flag.

Roberts began to run the show again and he sent Greg Tindle running through on goal but the left back produced a poor finish.

Soon afterwards, Roberts started and ended a quick break when he passed to Rob Pocock who played the ball on to Kyle Rigley but his cross found Roberts’ head with the ball flying over the bar.

Cox produced a lovely piece of skill on 75 minutes and struck a screamer that Porter saw late and somehow managed to tip over.

Then, with the game seemingly destined for a goalless draw, Cox dispossessed Stanley 25 yards from goal, took a few steps, and struck an excellent low finish into the corner of the net to make it 1-0 with nine minutes remaining.

With United having to change to a more attacking formation, gaps were left in defence and Cox took full advantage minutes later with another lovely finish to seal the points for his team.
