Shrivenham and Westbury in grudge match

LAST season’s title contenders go head-to-head in OCA Division One this Saturday as Shrivenham host Westbury, hoping to get revenge after their league heartache in 2013.

Westbury beat Shrivenham in the corresponding fixture at the end of last season to win the Division One title and, after a no result and a defeat for the two sides respectively last week, both will be keen to get a win on the board.

It has always been the fiercest of rivalries because of both teams’ recent successes and, even this early into the season, Shrivenham Vice-captain Rhys Mills is sure that the match will be as competitive as ever.

“Judging by seasons past, matches between ourselves and Westbury have never been short of a competitive edge, no matter how early or late in the season,” he said.

“We are two sides that know each other very well and I’m sure Bowlesy (Shrivenham captain Alex Bowles) will have no trouble rousing the lads for a fierce test on Saturday”.

Skipper Bowles has made two changes from last weekend, with Scott Winskill and Ben Hull replacing Andrew Bowles and Simon Hipwell.

Last week’s defeat against Great Horwood was a big disappointment for Shrivenham but Mills, whose 70 with the bat was one of very few positives to take from the game, has quickly extinguished any thought that defeats will be ever-present in the forthcoming campaign.

“On a personal note, it was obviously nice to start the season with some runs, but collectively, we know we have the quality and we will bounce back strongly from the performance last week. We all know where we let ourselves down and all will be striving for a marked improvement,” he said.

“We can be confident this weekend especially, because our rivalry with Westbury always brings the best out of us.”
