WESTBURY Town and Westwood Social Club will meet at Westbury United’s Meadow Lane ground tonight in the final of the EJ Shanley & Son-sponsored Spring Cup.

For Andy Cousins' Westbury side it will give them the perfect opportunity to go into their final match of the season at Melksham Town A, who they are battling with for the second automatic promotion spot, with one piece of silverware already under their belts.

The cup competition, which is only open to third division sides, saw Westwood avoid a preliminary round match while Westbury were drawn at local rivals Westbury United A, a game which they won 4-0 thanks to goals from Josh Dowd, Jamie Howse, Ryan Mead and Luke Smith.

Next up for Westbury were third division champions Lamb FC in a match that many people would have liked to have seen as the final.

The quarter-final meeting put paid to any chance of that and Westbury claimed a hard-fought, but well-deserved, 3-2 success which saw them take an early lead through Ian Gray before goals from Daryl Maxwell and Luke Smith put them three up leaving them to weather a Lamb onslaught which they survived to reach the last four.

Their semi final opponents were they hosted last season’s losing finalists United FC, who were no match for Cousins' men and were swept aside as Westbury won 5-2, Ian Gray, Daryl Maxwell and Scott Walford’s hat-trick taking them safely through to the final.

There, they will be hoping to go a step further than they did in 2010 when as the Angel they finished as runners up to Castle Combe. Westwood’s route to the final saw them begin with a 6-0 victory at home to The Stiffs who played the whole game with nine players, Tom Downes netting twice, Nick Gleeson once and Dan Thorne scoring a hat-trick to make up their half dozen An in-form Bratton Reserves stood in the way of a cup final appearance for Ben Cowdrey’s side but Westwood helped with an own goal claimed a 2-1 win to bring them to Meadow Lane tonight.

Nick Gleeson and Kevin Balchin’s own goal booked their place in the final of the competition they were beaten finallists in back in 2009 when they lost to Foresters.

The following season saw Westwood avenge that loss in the Division two cup final and the villagers will hope that they can upset the odds once more.

Westbury Town, who have beaten Westwood twice this term already, will be red-hot favourites to complete a hat-trick of victories over their opponents.

But Ben Cowdrey’s underdogs are sure to keep going for 90 minutes as they look to deny Westbury their first piece of two possible pieces of silverware in the next few weeks. The match kicks off at 7.30pm and if the weather is good may well draw a healthy crowd to Meadow Lane.
