BOWLS: Miserable run continues as county ladies suffer another loss
WILTSHIRE Ladies’ miserable run in the national inter-county championship, for the Johns Trophy since it was changed to a group competition, initially continued last weekend as the county women suffered their sixth defeat in a row.
They were beaten 130-101 by Cornwall at Culm Vale (Devon) and only collected two points out of a possible 22.
Not since the beginning of June 2012, when they beat Somerset at home at Amesbury, have Wiltshire tasted any joy in the group stages of the Johns Trophy.
Their lone win against Cornwall last Saturday at Cullompton was recorded by the rink of Viv Baskerville (Chippenham Town), Babs Salter (Wroughton), Kim Smith (Warminster) and skip Fizz Mace (North Wilts), who thumped their Cornish opponents 25-9.
Carol Grenfell’s four went close to a success, leading 23-21 at 19 ends, but lost the last two ends and went down by a shot.
Wiltshire are home to Gloucestershire at Devizes on June 21 in their next game and end their group matches two weeks later away at Culm Vale against Devon on Saturday, July 5.
Only the top team in the group moves forward to the quarter-finals on July 12.
The county’s ladies were also unsuccessful in their two most recent friendly games, as they suffered a narrow three shots loss at Stratton Churchway against Warwickshire and a 116-97 defeat away at Kidlington versus Oxfordshire.
Wiltshire Ladies will be seeking their first South West Counties League win of the season next Wednesday, June 11 when they host Somerset at Amesbury (1.30pm).
