WILTSHIRE under 18s chief Mel Gingell has rubbished suggestions that no more than three players from any one club should be picked for the county.

Gingell was reacting to comments made by Westbury United boss Paul Brickley, who says his team's form has suffered because of excessive call-ups.

Said Brickley: "On Saturday I will lose Nathan Hallett, David Thompson and Luke Smith. Matty Sharpe would also be missing if he had not broken his ankle.

"I know Mel likes to pick lads from the Western League because they have a physical edge, but to name eight in the squad, as he did earlier in the season, is too much.

"It's only because I agreed to travel to Clyst with a depleted squad that we've got a match at all this weekend.

"But I'm not prepared to go to Bradford the following week with key players missing. It's not fair on the club's supporters to play a local derby with half a team.

"It should be a rule that Wiltshire can only take a maximum of two or three players from each club."

But Gingell, whose side face Guernsey tomorrow at Melksham Town, insists he should be able to pick from anyone in the county.

"Lads have two aims in football. One is to play for your country and the other is to play for your county," he said.

"I feel the clubs should work around Wiltshire. If two or more are picked from any one club they have the option to call the game off, and many teams take advantage of that rule "I have helped Westbury out lots of times by releasing players. Their lads were given a choice by me and Paul and they all strongly said they wanted to play for Wiltshire."

Gingell also dismissed claims that Wiltshire should play more midweek matches to solve the problem.

He said: "We've only had two Saturday games so far, so that argument does not wash with me at the moment."
